At NKT Samui, our mission is to properly assess and treat your pain.  We use sophisticated movement evaluation, advanced motor control techniques, soft tissue therapies, corrective exercises and various breathing practices to help you relieve discomfort and recover from injury.

We treat all musculoskeletal conditions, pain, discomfort and injury.

This can include but is not limited to:

  • Back pain
  • Disc issues
  • Shoulder impingements
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • tenosynovitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • IT band syndrome
  • TMJ
  • Knee pain
  • Meniscus tears
  • Forward head posture
  • Hip clicking and impingements
  • Compressed joints
  • Tendinitis
  • Sciatica

Our treatments revolve around creating health in the 6 main pillars of functional movement:

Functional Movement pillars<br />
  1. Joint alignment refers to the positioning of the joint.  This requires balance of the mobilizing and stabilizing muscles around the joint.  Proper alignment decreases wear and tear and creates the foundation for strength development and motor control.
  2. Motor Control refers to the brain’s ability to produce movement by sending signals through the spinal cord into the peripheral muscles.  When injury occurs, motor control immediately depletes, reducing strength and stability.  Maintaining functional motor control is a crucial tenet to all physical therapy and rehabilitation programs.
  3. Variability is defined as the normal adaptations that occur throughout the movements we make.   Without variability, our mobility would be rigid and robotic. As important as joint alignment is, if our bodies are unable to seamlessly experience adaptation and chance, we become more prone to injury.
  4. Flexibility is our ability to stretch and bend without breaking.  Our muscles need a certain amount of flexibility so that we can move smoothly and feel comfortable in our bodies.  Flexibility does not necessarily translate into being pain free but can certainly aid in the healing process.
  5. Developing strength helps support tissues by providing stability and protecting the joints, tendons and ligaments. This aids in preventing injury and also promotes healing of damaged tissues.  Muscular strength is essential for maintaining overall functional ability and engaging in sports and other physical activities.
  6. The breath is the key component that binds all of this together.  Awareness of breath aids in our mental health and ability to remain present.  This allows our nervous system to remain calm which in turn facilitates functional motor control and movement.  Without awareness of breath, we are often stuck in a sympathetic state, constantly feeling like we are in a fight, flight or freeze state.

Our Modalities Include:

NeuroKinetic Therapy®

Our main modality is NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT®). NKT is a sophisticated form of manual therapy that combines motor control theory and manual muscle testing. It uses a set of unique protocols to detect compensation patterns that are causing your pain. NKT assesses the body’s understanding of movement at its root source in the brain and is a profound technique used by therapists world-wide.

Part of NKT’s practice includes soft tissue/massage techniques.

Our founder, Jory Serota, is one of NKT’s international teachers and leads seminars in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Dubai. He is also the creator of NKT Yoga and NKT Mobility and Assessment programs.

Benefits of NKT include:

  • Elimination of pain
  • Creation of new neural pathways
  • Increased strength and stability
  • Removal of compensation patterns
  • Improved muscular balance

Functional Range Conditioning®

Functional Range Conditioning is a system of mobility training that aims to create usable ranges of motion within the body with the ultimate goal of enhancing the quality of one’s movement and reducing the risk of injury.

The principles of FRC®  are based on scientific research in the fields of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics.  The system emphasizes the development of functional mobility through controlled articular rotations (CARs).  These are specific exercises that involve taking a joint through its full range of motion under active muscular control.  This helps to safeguard the body from injury and aids in rehabilitation from injury.

Within the FRC program is also something called Functional Range Assessment®. FRA® is a separate form of assessment that looks at the difference between passive and active ranges of motion in the body.  This helps to determine which tissues need to be treated and if the issue at hand is one of flexibility or strength.

Benefits of FRC and FRA include:

  • Better Joint Health
  • Increased Motor Control
  • Pain Free Movement
  • Increased Athletic Performance

Applied Yoga®

Applied Yoga® (AY) is a therapeutic modality that integrates traditional yoga, physical therapy, remedial exercise, motor control techniques, strength and functional mobility training into its practice.  It is designed to assess and alleviate pain by looking at the body through a joint-by-joint lens. AY determines if the pain that one is experiencing is due to a localized tissue restriction or a limitation in a related joint that is having a negative global effect.

The primary focus of AY is the development of strength, alignment, mobility, breath awareness and mindfulness.  This combination enables the therapist to look at their client holistically and not just a stack of bones and muscles.

Benefits of Applied Yoga include:

  • Development of strength and flexibility
  • Creation of alignment in the joints
  • A deepened body and mind connection
  • Ability to breathe more efficiently
  • Increased quality of life
  • Nervous system relaxation
  • More functional movement capacity

Kinesio Taping

Kinesio taping is a rehabilitative technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion.

Kinesio taping provides extended soft tissue manipulation, thus prolonging and enhancing the benefits of various manual therapies.  KT tape is latex-free and can be worn for days at a time. It can even be worn in water.

Kinesiology taping has been featured in every Olympic Games since 1994 and is worn by professional and amateur athletes alike, from the vast majority of sporting disciplines.
